Workshop: Using AWS to set up a virtual server

Hey Everyone,

For the next meeting we will be running our first workshop of the year where we will be teaching you how to set up a virtual server using AWS (Amazon Web Services). We will be taking you through step by step and hopefully by the end of the night you will have your very own website hosted on a virtual server. We are going to be using the github student developer pack to gain access to AWS for free – so don’t worry about needing to pay for your own server.

In order to take part in the workshop there are a few things you need to do before the meeting:

  1. Create an account on github (skip this if you already have one) –
  2. Sign up to the github student developer pack –
  3. Sign up to AWS educate –
  4. If you are on Windows, download putty & puttyGen –

Please do this before the meeting because it can take up to an hour your AWS educate application to be accepted.
After you have registered for everything, all you need to do is show up to the meeting with your laptop and we will teach you with everything else. If you have any trouble with any of the steps above, don’t hesitate to get in touch with someone from the committee. As always, meeting will be held in the same room at the same time (2B84 @ 6:30pm).

See you there
